The number of users that choose WWCN above IRC networks is a bit
disappointing. I think the problem mainly is that it is hard for
a group of users to move to WWCN. Some kind of gateway server has
to be written that copies output on an IRC channel to a WWCN channel
and vice versa.
Another problem is that the more features are added to WWCN, the less
compatible it is with IRC. A lot of IRC clients have problems with
the channel listing, and all of them get confused by identical nicks.
In order to solve this problem, and to create a reference implementation
that other clients can refer to to see what I have in mind with a WWCN
client, I've started writing a text-based client for Unix platforms.
Its appearance will resemble that of ircII. The client uses ncurses
to be as terminal-independent as possible.
The client will be GPL, and I'm looking for people who want to help
writing it. It involves writing data structures to store the data
received from the WWCN server, interpreting WWCN messages that update
the data structures, a help subsystem, etcetera. I'm looking for people
who want to help coding. If you're interested, please contact me and
we can see what part you can work on.
