Creating channels and directories
|
In this section, we will show you how to create channels and directories yourself. Having
your own spot in this conferencing cyberspace to chat with your friends about something
or nothing is what this place was built for. If you are looking for a good place, then
please take your time to have a look in all directories to see where your channel fits best.
As this conferencing is the first featuring directories, you are not the only one who doesn't
precisely know where to put channels. We don't know either what directories should exist,
so if you have good suggestions, don't hesitate to
mail us!!
|
But let's get to work now. In section Listing directories we have seen
how to examine the modes of a channel: mk-dir or mk-chan. These determine if you are allowed to
create a channel or a directory. Let's start with the easiest: creating a channel.
|
Let's say we want to create the channel about taco-eaters we mentioned before. We have
already seen that the channel "#rec.cooking.mexican" allows channel creation (check this
using the "/list" command!). To create the channel "#rec.cooking.mexican.taco", simply
type the join command with this channelname: "/join #rec.cooking.mexican.taco"
and that's it! Of course, if someone else is also following this online course, the channel
may already exist. Check with the "/list" command if another name doesn't exist yet, for
example "#rec.cooking.mexican.machaca". Then create it, just for the kicks...
|
You will notice that your newly-created channel will die as soon as it becomes empty.
Perhaps you may ask yourself: but I have seen channels in the list that seem to exist
even when empty! How come? Well the answer is this: channels that are registered
will never die. They just keep on existing, advertising their presence in the directory
listings, anxiously waiting for users to join them. If you want to register your channel,
please contact us. Mention the
channel name, charter, contact name and e-mail, and (if your group has one) a URL.
We will put a channel registration form on the web real soon (cough).
