Joining channels
|
In this section, we will finally learn how to join a channel and chat! Well, joining a
channel is dead easy. If you know the precise name, let's say "#irc.help", then you simply
type the command "/join #irc.help". You will then see something like this:
|
*** NAME : irc.help
*** CHARTER : providing help to IRC users
*** CONTACT : World Wide Conferencing Network
*** CONTACT EMAIL : wwcn@wit387401.student.utwente.nl
*** URL : http://wit387401.student.utwente.nl/wwcn
|
This is a registered channel, as all kind of information about the channel is available:
charter, contact name- and e-mail, and even a URL. This channel has been registered by the
World Wide Conferencing network itself, to support IRC users in their migration from IRC
to WWCN.
|
In most clients, a lot of people join right after you did. This doesn't mean that all these
persons suddenly simultaneously joined the same channel. It is a symptom of the way the
information about the channel is gathered from servers all around the world. As more
information arrives, more people are added to the channel. This may seem inconvenient, but
as true WWCP compatible clients are being developed, this symptom will disappear.
|
So, the trick of joining a channel simply is finding its precise name (using the "/list"
command) and then finally just typing "/join". That wasn't so difficult now, was it!
